Sherwood Dental focuses on practices using the least invasive means possible to deliver optimal health to Oakville dental patients. One way we do this is with the use of laser dentistry. Our practice has invested in dental lasers to provide our patients with gentle therapy for a vast array of dental procedures and treatments. We believe technology is extremely effective and very beneficial to the wellbeing of our patients. We have different types of lasers, which are designed for specific use in soft tissue or hard tissue applications.

Lasers used for soft tissue procedures are appropriate for treatments involving such areas of the mouth as the gums and the inside of the cheeks. They can be targeted very precisely to the area that is in need of treatment, allowing healthy tissue to be left undisturbed. This provides a patient with a more comfortable experience overall, as well as improved outcomes and healing. Procedures appropriate for this type of laser dentistry include gum surgeries, gum contouring, and periodontal treatments. Soft tissue lasers work well to kill bacteria and remove diseased tissue, providing a more hygienic environment.

Hard tissue lasers are used for many procedures involving teeth and bone. These lasers can also be accurately targeted to a specific area, minimizing any damage to healthy tooth structure. Pain is often greatly reduced, which means less anesthesia is necessary for the patient. They also remove the sound of the drill from the equation, which can be a source of anxiety for many patients. These state-of-the-art lasers work well in dental settings, resulting in a well-prepared surface for dental treatments, such as fillings, bonding, and root canals. A patient can expect fewer side effects when treated with laser dental procedures than most traditional dental therapies.

Owner dentist Dr. Stephen Gaines is an authority on restorative, cosmetic, rehabilitative, and laser dentistry. Having graduated from the University of Toronto, he earned his dental degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (1997). He follows continuing education courses to keep up with dentistry developments. He’s a lecturer, trainer and Fellow and Founding Member of the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry.

Dr. Arti Patel has extensive clinical experience in cosmetic/restorative dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, and pediatric dentistry.
