What preventive services are available?
- Education. At the forefront of preventive care is an education on oral hygiene. Conditions such as periodontal disease, an infection of the mouth, can cause the loss of bone, gum tissue, and teeth. Cavities, or tooth decay, can eat away at natural tooth enamel, resulting in permanent damage to one or more teeth. Without proper care, patients may significantly increase their risks of developing these issues and may find that the damage extends beyond repair. Our team will educate patients on proper oral hygiene habits, including how to brush and floss the teeth.
- Restoration. If conditions such as cavities start, early detection of these issues is key to having the opportunity to restore the smile. Cavities can be stopped with the use of a dental filling, which fills the hole left behind in the enamel. However, if the cavity becomes deep, it can cause an infection inside of the tooth that requires a root canal to fix before consideration of permanent extraction.
- Cleanings and examinations. Every six months, patients of all ages should visit their dentist for a full professional cleaning and a comprehensive examination, which may include dental x-rays to check oral health beyond what can be seen with the naked eye. Any conditions caught during this time are diagnosed and patients can speak with their dental provider regarding the treatment options available to them.
