Drs. Stephen Gaines and
Arti Patel are dedicated dental providers who understand the importance of a healthy smile. This includes starting children off with a proper foundation. At Sherwood Dental, we stress with our patients how important oral health is and how proper hygiene habits can extend the lifespan of teeth and reduce the risk of infection and decay. This includes educating children! Our practice in Oakville, Ontario offers dental services for not only adults but children as well, allowing children to fully understand the importance of proper dental health and development at a young age.
When should my child see the dentist?
The providers at Sherwood Dental in Oakville encourage parents to seek dental care for children around the ages of 3-4 years old. At this point, our dental team will evaluate their mouth and educate parents on how to reduce the risk of childhood caries (cavities) and the formation of periodontal disease. After the initial appointment, patients should return with their children every six months for a cleaning. During these appointments, the dentist may also provide fluoride applications or sealants to add an extra layer of protection against cavities and disease.
What can I do to protect my child’s smile?
Even though the primary teeth are lost over the years to make way for permanent teeth, it is still vital for parents to take care of these teeth and build a foundation of proper oral health habits. Below are a few tips in protecting a baby’s or child’s teeth:
- Avoid putting the baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice
- Use a wet rag to wipe the teeth and gums after eating
- Avoid a diet high in sugars or acidic drinks or foods
- Help children learn how to brush and floss as age-appropriate
- Ensure your child is seen by a dentist every six months
